Historically, the centre was funded by Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and managed by Great Milton Primary School. It first opened in 2009 in Great Milton and moved to its current premises in Wheatley in April 2012.
Early in 2016, OCC announced its decision to reduce the support of 44 Children's Centres in the county to just 8 Children and Family Centres Hubs located in areas of greatest need in City/Urban locations. Despite vigorous campaigning against the cuts the County Council closed the remaining centres in March 2017 and the Maple Tree doors were shut.
A Community Partnership, Friends of the Maple Tree (FMTCC), made up of local parents and supporters was formed, and given legal status as a sub-committee of St Mary's Parochial Church Council.
With the help of the church, OCVA and local parishes a funding applicaton was submitted to OCC in January 2017 and a transition fund of £10,000 was granted to help the community re-open the centre.
A busy 6 months of Charity applications, funding requests, policy writing, recruitment and 101 other things followed and here we are today.
We are now a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) named The Maple Tree.
